Assessment

The Assessment Department is primarily responsible for the valuation of all real and personal property in Jackson County.

Board of Equalization

The BOE hears appeals and equalizes the valuation and assessment of all real and tangible personal property taxable by the County.

The Community Backed Anti-Crime Tax is utilized to "combat" substance abuse and drug-related crime in Jackson County. COMBAT views drug abuse and crime as both a health crisis and legal matter. COMBAT takes a 3-pronged approach to curtailing drug abuse with prevention, treatment, and law enforcement assistance.

Clerk of the County Legislature

The County Clerk serves under the Legislative branch of Jackson County government.

Collection

The Collection Department collects and accounts for approximately $1.4 billion in tax revenues for more than 80 taxing jurisdictions, such as cities, school districts, etc., located within Jackson County. Depending on the time of year, our staff assists more than 36,000 taxpayers monthly.

Communications

The Communications Department connects Jackson County residents with information about their government’s services, operations and policies, while also communicating between County departments and offices to maintain an informed and motivated workforce.

Compliance Review Office

The Compliance Review Office tracks and reviews contracts throughout the contract life cycle to ensure compliance in each phase. Particular attention is paid to the areas of M/W/VBE utilization, payment of prevailing wage, and equal opportunity employment.

Corrections

The Jackson County Detention Center (JCDC) houses adult inmates being held on state charges. In 2019, the daily average population is 872 inmates.

County Counselor

The County Counselor is an attorney, appointed by the County Executive.

Environmental Health

Environmental Health is responsible for implementing the policies and procedures of the Jackson County Food Code.

Ethics, Human Relations & Citizen Complaints

The EHRCC exists to discourage and resolve unfairness and ensure compliance with statutory protections afforded the citizens of Jackson County.

Finance & Purchasing

The Jackson County Finance & Purchasing Department is essentially the keeper of the County's books, paying the bills and seeking bids for contracts.

Geographic Information Systems

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department for Jackson County is responsible for managing the mapping needs of the county, and the distribution of the map products, both hardcopy and digital, to other county departments, cities, state and federal agencies, and the citizens of Jackson County.

Health Department

The Jackson County Health Department, managed and operated by Truman Medical Center, provides a variety of medical services and health education/training programs to assist in the prevention of illnesses and communicable diseases.

Legislative Auditor

The Jackson County Auditor's office plays a crucial role in the County Charter's system of checks and balances.

Medical Examiner

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office (JCMEO) is governed by Missouri Revised Statutes. JCMEO is dedicated to providing exceptional death investigations services to the citizens of Jackson County, as well as other Missouri counties on a referral basis.

Municipal Court

Jackson County Municipal Court considers all tickets for general County Ordinance violations posted June 1, 2008, or later. Municipal Court dockets are held on the first, second, third and fifth Wednesday of the month at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in the Jury Room (Room 157) on the 1st floor.

Prosecutor's Office

The Jackson County Prosecutor's office is responsible for prosecuting felonies and misdemeanors. The office locations are in Kansas City in the Downtown Courthouse and in the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence.

Public Administrator

Public Works

It's our job to care for your county home like you care for your personal home. We repair and maintain; we make sure businesses and citizens honor the codes; we cut back growth, clear unsightly weeds and plow the snow in the unincorporated areas in which the County has possession and control. We take care of your county government buildings, and plan for future growth.

Recorder of Deeds

The Recorder of Deeds Department records nearly 100 various types of documents.

Sheriff's Office

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for unincorporated areas of Jackson County and works with other law enforcement agencies locally and regionally. The Sheriff's Office also provides security for the Jackson County Courthouses and oversees operations at the Jackson County Detention Center.
