Saying it will make for a bigger, better and more accessible event, leaders of the American Royal have announced the World Series of Barbecue® Championship will move from the West Bottoms to Arrowhead Stadium starting this October.
“Voter-approved renovations have clearly made the Truman Sports Complex an attractive venue for many types of events,” said Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders. “I am thrilled the American Royal Barbecue, a unique and iconic event, is staying in Jackson County.”
In a press release, American Royal chairman John Mitchell, Jr., said “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Arrowhead Stadium at the Truman Sports Complex.”
According to the release, Mitchel said the change to Arrowhead’s impressive stadium facilities will not only offer “a more spacious environment, but allow the American Royal to elevate the experience for competitive teams, ultimately creating a better experience for customers and patrons alike.”
Arrowhead Stadium opened in August 1972, while Royals Stadium (now Kauffman Stadium) opened the following spring. On April 4, 2006, Jackson County voters approved a plan to renovate and maintain the Truman Sports Complex.
In October 2014, Jackson County refinanced more than $360 million in bonds issued to renovate the stadium. Taxpayers are expected to save more than $34 million in interest on the bonds during their lifetime.
“We look forwarding to seeing a huge crowd at Arrowhead for the American Royal Barbecue this October,” said County Executive Sanders.
